This commercial project represents an exciting redevelopment for the Village of Mundelein, Illinois. The site formally held the Historic Mundelein Village Hall, so great importance fell upon any development that was to follow. Hezner worked with Village representatives to create a methodical plan and process that would serve as a model for future developers considering the Village of Mundelein for their projects. The project concept closely followed the village’s comprehensive plan, and the neighborhood scale and context served as an inspiration for the resulting architectural approach. The new two story commercial structure is positioned on a .77 acre site and includes 23,000 square feet of leasable space for retail, restaurant, and office uses. Key features include ambitious masonry applications on all elevations, creative pedestrian spaces for circulation and gathering, off street parking for convenient access, and rooftop areas for social gatherings and entertainment space. One critical consideration for this development along Hawley St. was creating contextually appropriate public improvements that continued the existing village motif through the careful use of streetscape and lighting. The Village hopes this development will not only be a source of great pride for the developer and community, but an important catalyst that will ignite other development downtown Mundelein
